the city dwells in me
public installation with multi-channel sound and animatronics
...the city dwells in me is a selected project for By George! Hidden Networks sponsored by the city of Sydney as part of the Art & About event. It is an intervention taking place between George Street and George Lane consisting of several larger-than-life sculpted skin outgrowths from the brick stone wall.
The project grew out of our innate desire to read subtle qualities present on the human body. Characteristics like old calloused hands, a weathered old face, light skin/dark skin, freckles & moles, young or old skin are the obscure story of the body. Taking these elements out of context - having them belong to a dirty old laneway - provides a tension between two seemingly common surfaces. We project our own characteristics into our buildings and invent a human narrative for them.
The concept behind 'I dwell in the city' is to get people thinking about how their environments affect them in return. Its in these strange traces of tenderness and frailty that offers a little hope, as they slowly but steadily take root and crumble away at the hard nature of the city.
