Breakwall Party

'Dancing to Architecture' screened at the end of Nobby's breakwall in Newcastle, Australia.

Followed by a kicka dance party.

About the night...

The setting was great. The end of the Nobby's Break Wall is spectacular. We projected Dancing to Architecture onto the signal tower with all of Newcastle's industrial harbour behind. The police came early, but were totally cool with it all. We had carpet laid out, and large yacht sails strung up everywhere. Candles lit the crevasses of the large breaker blocks, and the fairy lights were strung up to give the DJ booth a nice light of intimacy.

Some last minute technical work care of Owen and his trusty soldering iron made sure we had very good sound to entertain everyone - including the 30 or more freight ships out to sea. A little over 100 came for the screening, and more than 300 came for the dance party. It is a pretty big walk to the end of the break wall so credit to all those who made the effort. Especially Hugh who did the trip 7 times! That's nearly 28 kms!!

When the tunes picked up so did the tide and the waves with it. 3 storm fronts came through over the whole night delivering big winds to whip up our sails and pound spectacular waves over the break wall blocks - not a drop of rain fell. The crazy storms didn't even dent the commitment of our crowd. (Hats off to the lusty couple in the back of the DJ booth steeling a moment of wild intimacy, under the fairy lights. Nothing could distract the focus of our DJs though). Those unfortunate enough to be drenched by freak sets either powered on the dance floor to dry off, or raced home for a change of clothes. One guy came back with 3 changes of clothes, expecting to get done more than once more. All this of course only added to the huge amount of energy and excitement. Organisers worked frantically to protect the generators, speakers, and sound gear, making sure the party powered on. It powered on until 6am when we finally ran out of petrol.

This was a once in a lifetime event the likes of which may never again be seen. Thanks to all those who came and to the Festival Club and Vital Focus crew who helped to make it happen.
